"Pioneering angel investor backs startups with $1m." Gulf Daily News (Manama, Bahrain) (Oct 14, 2013) Global Issues In Context. Gale. Korea International School. 13 Nov. 2013

"Pioneering Angel Investor Backs Startups with $1m" is an article from one of my sources talked about in my literature review.  It is an explanatory article of a particular angel investor and his investments.

This article is an exemplary resource that describes the characteristic of an angel investor.  The article is in third person and seems to be quite professional.  However, most of the article is data heavy, talking about the amount of money invested, or reason heavy, explaining why the investor invested in specific companies.

The article might seem pretty cold, since there is not much of opinions, rather than stating facts about a specific angel investor.  There is a conglomeration of different opinions, however.  Although the author does not state his own side, there are different quotes from people talking about the angel and their opinions.  These quotations do not seem to be “proving” any facts.  In fact, the author is solely laying these quotes out in order to portray the man’s characteristics in all different types of modes.

Compared to different articles, this particular article is quite short and concise.  It does not use extraneous words, and tries to keep all things short and powerful.  The data is laid out in simple manner and so it is not hard to follow the article.  There is a quick background given on the company being invested (for better understanding) at the start of the article.  However, even this background information only emphasizes the main important factors in just a few sentences.

I believe that this article shows the best of the conventions of an angel investor for these reasons.

글러브 (2011)
Glove

The Korean movie Glove (2011) is a movie about a baseball team comprised of deaf teenagers.  The reason why I chose this movie was that Koreans are sensitive to disability and find the subject uncomfortable.  Therefore, there are not many movies portraying the disabled as able to entirely function in a society.  Even in this move, Glove, there are parts where one mother strictly forbids her child in joining the team because the child is more abled than the rest of the players.  The stereotypes of disability is quite harsh in the Korean society, because people are afraid of being different or having a unique lifestyle from others.  America is a heterogeneous country, but South Korea is comprised of mostly Koreans.  This fact brings Koreans to be more sensitive towards differences and becoming ‘unfit’.  In the end of the movie, the teenage boys in the team realize the value of playing in a team and hard work.  However, even to conclusion, the movie does not portray the teenage boys as functional in the actual society.

Angel Investor + Disability = ?

For my research project, I have decided to connect the side profession of an angel investor and disability.  These two are not as frequently linked as other professions, such as doctors.  However, this fact makes this connection more intriguing for myself.  Since there are little research material on this specific relationship, I would have to research on the two different areas and link them myself.  It would be nice if my blog post and research project become help for those like me in the future.
With these two I would like to talk about the investment of the angel and how it might help those with disabilities in entrepreneurship.  It is true that there are different investment companies that are trying to help companies grow with their help.  However,  they have limitations because of their size and want for efficiency.  the difference between investment companies and angel investors is that angel investing is an investment made with private funds.  The angel invests his or her personal finance over a company’s.  Although it would take much more effort and time to find the right companies to invest on, it is possible because it is a personal choice.
I would also like to emphasize the point of how I will be helping the disabled.  Different professions are helping the disabled in different ways.  For example, doctors may create a separate program for just the disabled to help them receive the right treatment.  However, angel investors will help the disabled, but in just the same ways that they help the ‘abled’.  What angels look for is a win win situation.  Although angels are ‘helping’ the business owners, they are also looking for a share back.  With this share, angels are growing their finances, just like all other investors.  Angels are not helping for charity, meaning they are not simply and altruistically gifting their finance.  They are trying to help for their own benefits.

When investigating disability in a professional perspective, I have quite a bit of trouble visualizing myself.  I have not yet found the profession that I want to pursue in, but there is something that I want to become, an Angel Investor.  Although it isn’t the main job, I still want to investigate the relation of disability and angel investing.

The main audiences and work partners that I will be working with are probably small company owners in need of investments.  By helping them establish their firm and business, in return I would receive a part of the share.  The nature of angel investing is lending a hand to those in need, which makes it a perfect environment to help the disabled.

An angel investor is a private ‘profession’, meaning that the investing comes from my own private fund.  Therefore, there are no limitations in what or how I can help the small corporations.

This is how disability can be related to angel investing.  With the helping nature of this profession, I can help the disabled in need to establish their own companies.  The disabled are frequently looked over in the large investment companies, because of the lack of a strong credential.  However, I can look more deeply into the profile of the company to help those more than on paper.

Compared to large investment corporations, private investors have more time and effort to find those to invest in.  Therefore, there are fewer cases of bias in which companies to invest.  Therefore, angel investors are perfect for helping the disabled to have a start in business.
